Many of us are looking to improve our impact on the environment.
According to the Office for National Statistics’ Public Attitudes tracker, in 2021, 75% of British adults were worried about climate change, and as we enter a new year with a new focus, lots of us are looking for ways to live greener and be more eco-friendly to do our part.
To give you some hints, tips, and tricks, here are six of our favorites for the new year approaching fast.
1. Review your energy Provider
According to November 2022 research from YouGov, switching to a renewables-only energy provider is one of Brits’ most popular steps to take to save the environment. Renewables-only providers aim to get most of their energy from clean energy sources like wind, solar, and hydroelectric, helping give you peace of mind that your funds are helping invest in the renewable energy future.
2. Buy local
From food to homewares, all the way to clothing, buying goods made in your local area will reduce the number of miles your purchases will need to travel from the field, to shop, to your home. Farm shops and food fairs can be a great way to do this, and you get the added benefit of improving your local economy and likely enjoying better-quality goods in kind.
3. Boost your Home’s efficiency
Investing in draughtproofing, insulation, and at the more expensive end of the spectrum, new heating technologies like ground source heat pumps, will reduce your energy requirements and benefit the climate in kind. Look out for government subsidies here – there are a few homeowners who can take advantage of them.
4. Invest in an electric Car
Electric cars are big news now and offer a huge opportunity for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint. Look at electric car dealerships and consider leasing an electric car if you can’t afford to purchase one. Doing so will let you change up your car to help you to become more eco-friendly.
5. Use Reusables
From cotton pads to straws, there’s an endless number of products on the market to help us all become more environmentally friendly in our day-to-day living. Try out different brands and products to work out which ones will work best for you and check online to see if there are any zero-waste stores nearby that you can visit to keep your plastic and packaging consumption down.
6. Recycle everything
Nowadays, just about everything is recyclable and we have plenty of options to ensure we can achieve this. Look at what you currently chuck straight into the bin and work out if there’s any way you can start to up your recycling game. Looking for your local recycling hubs is a good idea, as they’ll have bins for everything, from clothing to electronics.
